Fifty-five percent of voters say they’ve seen AI misinformation this election

On Tuesday, Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) released new polling on voters’ attitudes towards AI policy and their experiences with AI content during this year’s presidential election. The polling arrives in the final weeks of an election cycle that has featured a flood of AI-generated content. The new polling shows that fifty-five percent of all voters, including a majority of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, say they’ve been exposed to AI-generated fake information this presidential election.

The poll, conducted by Morning Consult from October 16 to 19, surveyed 2,001 registered voters with a margin of error of ±2%. The full poll is available here.

“The good news is that a lot of voters are aware of AI misinformation going around this election,” said ARI President Brad Carson. “The bad news is, it’s everywhere, and Election Day won’t be the end of it. We can expect more AI misinformation to flood online channels in the final stretch of this year’s election and in the weeks that follow as malicious actors try to sow the seeds of chaos.”

Thirty-one states, including swing states like Pennsylvania and Nevada, have no election laws on the books regulating how AI can be used in political content or what transparency is required to warn voters that content is AI-generated. Nineteen states have passed AI and election transparency laws since the debut of AI, most requiring that election content disclose the use of AI.
