Cross-ideological coalition says transparency is critical as advanced AI systems grow more capable
As artificial intelligence models become more powerful and Congress debates various forms of regulation, a broad coalition of 28 public interest and technology policy organizations on Wednesday sent a letter to the White House urging the release of the Administration’s AI framework. Last month, the White House said it finished drafting its voluntary framework for evaluating advanced AI models while reports revealed that it would keep the framework confidential.

With AI companies and the models they are developing becoming increasingly powerful, carrying implications for cybersecurity, the workforce, children’s wellbeing, and national security, the White House’s confidential framework provides the only federal check on AI models before they are deployed. Wednesday’s letter calls for the framework to be released to ensure public accountability and transparency.
“As Congress considers how to move forward with AI regulation, it is all the more important that policymakers have full access to the Administration’s framework,” the coalition said in the letter. “The Administration has an opportunity to help lead the conversation on AI policy happening now in Congress, but only by transparently sharing its own vision for AI oversight.”
The cross-ideological coalition of more than two dozen public interest, consumer, civil liberties, and technology policy organizations was organized by Americans for Responsible Innovation and the Center for Democracy and Technology. The coalition spans groups with differing views on the role of government and technology policy, united around the need for greater transparency and public accountability in how advanced AI systems are evaluated.
