Awards recognize importance of AI to scientific advancements

The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton for discoveries in machine learning that provided the foundation for advancements in artificial intelligence. In bestowing the awards, the Nobel Committee recognized the importance of the scientists’ discoveries for research in physics but also for the development of AI tools in our daily lives. Hinton, sometimes referred to as the “godfather of AI”, has expressed concerns over the safety of new AI models and their impact on society.

“It’s fitting that we’re recognizing the groundbreaking work of John Hopfield and Geoffrey HInton, but we also need to heed their words,” said Americans for Responsible Innovation President Brad Carson. “Right now, some of the smartest people in the world, including one of today’s Nobel winners, are looking at AI models and raising alarms about the lack of safeguards around this new technology. If our brightest minds are concerned, lawmakers should listen and act.”
