ARI applauds Treasury Secretary’s call for risk reduction channel
On Sunday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the U.S. has proposed a new notification mechanism for AI incidents impacting national security. The latest proposal follows calls by ARI for strategic collaboration with China to reduce AI risks and reflects ARI’s recommendation for a U.S.-China AI risk reduction channel.

“Even in the face of intense competition, the US and China can come to agreement on the need to reduce risks to our national security,” said ARI President Brad Carson. “It’s in everyone’s interest to develop transparency into high-risk AI incidents and to ensure we maintain human control over nuclear weapons. It takes political guts to propose collaboration in the face of competitive pressures, and for that, I applaud Sec. Bessent. We can find common ground when it comes to reducing the risks AI poses to our national security, and Sec. Bessent’s proposal is a strong first step.”
In a letter to Sec. Bessent last week, ARI urged the Treasury Secretary to pursue AI talks with China that recognize the security risks posed by AI and to pursue four objectives, including a U.S.-China AI risk reduction channel, a reaffirmation of human control over nuclear weapons, a shared AI risk glossary, and regular expert summits on AI risks between the two countries.
