Cuts will harm US ability to lead in AI

On Wednesday, reports surfaced that all National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) probationary employees are to be fired imminently. These cuts are likely to result in headcount reductions of more than 50% in offices key to AI innovation, including the U.S. AI Safety Institute and the CHIPS for America program. Many of these staff were hired within the last year and are still within their probationary period.

“The loss of so many talented technical employees will gravely undermine our ability to ensure America leads in AI, ” said ARI President Brad Carson. “In a time when competition from China is increasing, the US should be seeking to make sure that NIST has all the resources it needs to drive responsible AI innovation. Cutting costs at the agency responsible for maintaining American AI leadership is a gift to China and will only hurt the US in the long run.”

NIST plays a crucial role in advancing US AI development and innovation, including through the testing of new AI models, creating voluntary guidelines to support private sector adoption of AI, and boosting the domestic manufacturing capacity of the semiconductor chips necessary to power AI. ARI has previously called for legislation authorizing the U.S. AI Safety Institute and prioritizing funding for NIST alongside many companies, nonprofits, and universities.
