On Thursday, Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) released a new report examining the unique vulnerabilities of AI infrastructure to attacks and calling for the federal government to designate AI as critical infrastructure. The report explores why AI, which is increasingly interwoven across private and public sectors, should not be protected solely by voluntary corporate measures.

The Invisible Backbone: How to Secure AI Infrastructure Today for Tomorrow
By Dr. Terrence Kelly and Jessica Maksimov
“AI systems are becoming increasingly integrated across industries, including health care, finance, and manufacturing, and without formal national security standards, an attack on these systems could lead to the incapacitation of these sectors at once,” said ARI Policy Analyst Jessica Maksimov. “The private sector alone cannot protect AI systems from sector-wide adversarial attacks. As America becomes increasingly dependent on AI, the government should designate AI as critical infrastructure and bolster our country’s capacity to ward off incoming threats.”
The new report recommends that the President designates AI as critical infrastructure, subjecting the sector to incident reporting requirements. Additionally, the authors recommend that CISA and the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) coordinate to develop security standards across the AI infrastructure stack.
