Groups highlight Lutnick’s stance on AI standards, export controls, and industrial policy
On Tuesday, a coalition of AI policy groups announced their endorsement for Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in a letter to the Senate, urging lawmakers to support Lutnick’s confirmation. The letter cites Lutnick’s support for export controls on advanced chips and model weights, his advocacy for standard setting at NIST, and his backing of industrial policies that bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing and expand AI-related energy and data infrastructure. “As artificial intelligence reshapes our economy, our national security, and our workforce, the next Secretary of Commerce is going to have a historic role to play as a leader on AI policy,” said ARI President Brad Carson. “Howard Lutnick’s support for AI standards, his advocacy for export controls, and his stance on domestic semiconductor manufacturing are all signals he’s a strong choice to lead this work in the Trump Administration. As America competes with global adversaries to lead on AI, Lutnick is going to play to win.”
Last week, ARI endorsed a slate of appointments from the new administration, including Lutnick, Michael Kratsios, Gail Slater, Jacob Helberg, and Dan Driscoll.
