New export controls prohibit access by foreign nationals, including those in the U.S. and Anthropic employees
On Friday, Anthropic announced that the Trump Administration is issuing export controls suspending access to the company’s latest AI model for all foreign nationals, including those living in the U.S. The new export controls, which apply to both customers and employees, including those in allied nations such as Great Britain and Canada, forced Anthropic to abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
“AI regulation will be some of the most serious and consequential work the U.S. government does over the next generation, and it is imperative that this work be done consistently across industry, without favor, and according to a clear, rules-based process,” said ARI President Brad Carson. “Based on what we know thus far, the decision to block Anthropic’s latest AI model fails that test, and as a result, risks America’s edge in AI innovation. While the federal government must have the capacity to evaluate and even block the deployment of advanced AI models in extraordinary situations, the utmost care is required to insulate these decisions from impulse and political favoritism. When ad hoc executive actions replace clear standards, America risks surrendering its lead in AI and allowing genuinely dangerous technology to be deployed.”
This week’s new export controls follow on the tail of a dispute between Trump administration officials and Anthropic over the AI company’s restrictions on the use of its AI models for domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons systems.
