EO leverages federal AI resources to support discovery in health, biotechnology, nuclear, space exploration, and more
On Monday, President Trump signed an executive order (EO) launching the Genesis Mission, an initiative leveraging federal technology and AI resources to support discovery across an array of scientific fields. The Genesis Mission will create a closed-loop AI experimentation platform, support public-private collaboration, leverage the National Laboratories, and coordinate data and infrastructure across the federal government to support innovation in fields including biotech, nuclear, and space exploration.
“AI is a game changer for scientific discovery across almost every field,” said ARI Executive Director Eric Gastfriend. “Today’s Executive Order is about making sure our federal government is pulling on every lever to put AI to use for good. When the full weight of the federal government is pointed toward scientific discovery, it changes what’s possible. Executed correctly, the Genesis Mission has the potential to accelerate breakthroughs that would have taken years or even decades.”
The EO’s areas of focus for discovery include biotechnology, critical materials, nuclear fission and fusion energy, space exploration, quantum information science, and semiconductors and microelectronics. Some of the priorities in the EO, like funding AI research for rare-earth substitutes and for breakthroughs in electronics and fusion, reflect proposals shared by ARI during the drafting of the Administration’s AI Action Plan.
