Event explores the widening gap between biosecurity and AI capabilities
On Wednesday, October 29, join ARI for a virtual panel on AI and biosecurity with leading experts, including an author of recent research from Microsoft exposing new biosecurity loopholes in the AI era. Panelists at next Wednesday’s event include Microsoft scientist Bruce Wittman; Dean Ball at the Foundation for American Innovation; Twist Bioscience Vice President James Diggans; and Integrated DNA Technologies’ Adam Clore. The panel is open to the press and the public and will include Q&A with attendees.

Next week’s event follows new research exposing loopholes in the screening process for synthetic proteins that can be used to create biological weapons and dangerous synthetic organisms. The study authors found that by tweaking the structure of known, harmful proteins, a bad actor could successfully evade the detection of software meant to screen for harmful toxins and pathogens. While the security loophole has now been patched, scientists are raising concerns about the widening gap between AI’s protein design capabilities and current security practices.
Panelists at next Wednesday’s virtual event include:
- Bruce Wittmann: Senior Applied Scientist, Office of the Chief Scientific Officer, Microsoft
- Dean Ball: Senior Fellow, Foundation for American Innovation; former Senior Policy Advisor for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy
- James Diggans: Vice President of Policy and Biosecurity at Twist Bioscience and Chair, International Gene Synthesis Consortium
- Adam Clore: Director of Technology R&D, Integrated DNA Technologies
- Rachel Hovde: Policy Director, ARI (Moderator)
