UK AI Safety Institute eliminates safety from its name
On Friday, the UK will rename its U.K. AI Safety Institute as the U.K. AI Security Institute. The renaming follows an AI Summit in Paris at which U.S. Vice President JD Vance spoke critically of AI safety efforts.
“The title above the door may change, but the work needs to go on,” said ARI President Brad Carson. “The important thing is that institutes like UK AISI continue the task of ensuring AI is safe, secure and beneficial. Ultimately, security and safety are issues that go hand in hand. We can’t be secure when AI is unsafe, and we are less safe when we fail to prioritize national security.”
Legislation introduced late last year by Rep. Jay Obernolte would rename the U.S. AISI to the Center for AI Advancement and Reliability. Rep. Obernolte has announced his intention to reintroduce the bill this year.
